Adopted November 13, 2010
The Winneconne Public Library welcomes children of all ages to use its facilities and services. In an effort to ensure the safety and well being of the children and maintain an atmosphere of constructive library use, the following policy regarding appropriate use of the library by children and their caregivers is adopted.
Responsibility for the welfare and the behavior of children using the library rests with the parent/guardian or an assigned chaperone. Though staff will always respond with care and concern, they cannot assume responsibility for children's safety and comfort when they are unattended.
Staff may need to contact authorities such as the Police either to assist with the enforcement of discipline in the library or to ensure the safety of an unattended child. Staff members are required to report suspected cases of abuse or neglect of minor children to the proper authorities.
Children of preschool age and younger must be adequately supervised by a parent, guardian, or responsible caregiver that is at least twelve years of age. School-age children may use the library unattended provided they are able to maintain proper library behavior.
The librarian has the right to bar a child from activities due to repeated offenses of inappropriate behavior if necessary. The Library Director will notify parent(s) and or guardian(s) of children who exhibit rude or disruptive behaviors in the library.
